Established in 1997, the Blackbuck Conservation Society is committed to the protection and preservation of blackbucks in the Balipadar-Bhetanai region and surrounding areas of Ganjam district. Our mission is to safeguard these graceful creatures and their natural habitat through community engagement, awareness programs, and direct intervention. Under the leadership of Sri Amulya Kumar Upadhyaya, we have fostered a harmonious relationship between local communities and wildlife, ensuring the blackbucks thrive in a safe environment.

Bhetanai: A Sanctuary of Harmony Between Blackbucks and Conservation Efforts
The Blackbuck Conservation Society, led by President Amulya Upadhyaya, is based in Bhetanai village, Aska block, Ganjam district, Odisha. This organization is dedicated to the preservation of blackbucks in the region. Under Upadhyaya’s leadership, the society has been instrumental in increasing the blackbuck population in Ganjam from approximately 1,533 in 2011 to around 6,875 by 2021.
Bhetanai is renowned for its significant blackbuck population, attracting numerous tourists annually. The local community plays a crucial role in conservation efforts, protecting these animals due to cultural and religious beliefs that associate blackbucks with prosperity and good fortune.
For visitors interested in experiencing the blackbuck habitat, accommodations such as Maitri Homestay are available in the area. This homestay offers facilities including one AC room, four non-AC rooms, and a 20-bed dormitory, providing lodging and boarding for tourists.
The society’s efforts have not only contributed to wildlife conservation but have also enhanced eco-tourism in the region, providing economic benefits to the local community. The harmonious relationship between the villagers and the blackbucks serves as a model for community-led conservation initiatives.
